Deputy Ministers Bheki Cele and Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams host Youth Career Expo at Coffee Bay, 2 Jun

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, General Bheki Cele together with Deputy Minister for Telecommunication and Postal Service, Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams and the MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, Mr Mlibo Qoboshiyane invite members of the media to the life changing, significant Youth Career Expo to be held at Coffee Bay in the Eastern Cape.

The Youth Career Expo will provide unemployed youth with the amazing diversity of career opportunities in the three sectors (agriculture, forestry and fisheries) of the department including Departments of Home Affairs, Health Labour and more.

Sector Expos are aimed at cultivating an affinity between the sector and young people and also empower youngsters through information sharing and showcasing opportunities available within the department.

This initiative will further serve as a platform for different stakeholders including youth development programmes to interact in the effort of empowering and upskilling young producers. The Career Expo will expose the youth to opportunities and programmes of the department.

General Cele has been successfully accelerating youth recognition and forging more youth participation in the sectors. In 2016 General Bheki Cele launched the first ever #Agri-Stars event in Pretoria, which is now followed by the Career Expo. More than 500 youth are expected to attend. The exposition will include various sector stakeholders showcasing their goods and services.

In reverberation with the National Youth Policy 2020, DAFF has developed the Young Producers and Entrepreneurs Strategy (YPES) that seeks to primarily support the establishment of youth owned and/or managed enterprises, youth entrepreneurs, and other activities that will encourage active participation of youth in the agricultural, forestry and fisheries sectors in order to bridge the gap of retiring producers while reducing unemployment and poverty.

Deputy Minister General Bheki Cele will further visit a youth-owned and driven project in the area of Coffee Bay to monitor progress and see how young people are coping in their respective sectors. DAFF theme for 2017 is focusing on the youth “Harnessing investment for youth empowerment towards South Africa’s economic development and future prosperity”.
