Labour's UIF on increasing allocation on job creation investment

UIF tells parliament of its attempts to ease unemployment burden

The UIF has increased its allocation on job creation investment from 10 per cent of its funds to 20 per cent in the current financial year, Parliament was told in Cape Town on Wednesday.

Boas Seruwe the UIF commissioner was addressing the Portfolio Committee on labour on the strategic and performance plan for the period 2016 to 2021. He said the allocation had been approved by the fund’s investment and the Board.

“We want to create 100 000 jobs in the coming years.  In the past, we managed to create 56 000 jobs, he said. “We are targeting sectors that are shedding jobs like mining and steel. We gave Public Investment Corporation the mandate to focus on such sectors. “Seruwe said.

“We are also trying to streamline the training layoffs scheme to respond quicker to the applications from companies that are in distress”.

“This will ensure that all agencies in the Department of Labour that help workers who are in distress are brought under one roof”.

The UIF presentation came hot on the heels of a presentation by the Department of Labour’s Director General Thobile Lamati.

Today the committee will listen to presentation from Productivity South Africa and Compensation Fund.
