Minister Dipuo Peters launches 2016 Easter Road Safety Campaign, 18 Mar

The Easter holiday period is once again upon us. This is a period in which many people travel to different places of worship and also a period in which schools close for the first quarter of the year.

An analysis of traffic movement and traffic count on the Thursday before the Easter weekend for the past six years has demonstrated a higher than normal traffic count on major arterial routes out of Gauteng into Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Free State.

Traffic volumes peak again on Sunday and Monday as many travellers return from places of worship and holiday.

Transport Minister, Ms. Dipuo Peters will officially launch the 2016 Easter Road Safety Campaign on Friday, 18 March in Mankweng, Limpopo ahead of the holiday weekend to heighten the implementation of the 365 Days Road Safety Programme.

Through the 365 Days Road Safety Programme, the Minister and Department seek to bring all South Africans together as partners in making the roads of the Republic safe.

The Minister will be joined during the launch by the Deputy Minister of Transport Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, provincial MECs for Public Works, Roads and Transport and Community Safety and Liaison, CEOs of Transport State Owned Entities, key transport stakeholders and members of the community.

The Minister will call upon all road users, private motorists, public transport operators (short and long distance), freight transport operators, passengers and pedestrians to take personal responsibility for their safety on the roads as they will be traveling to various destinations during the Easter holidays and at all times.
