The Minister of Transport Ms. Dipuo Peters, successfully formed part of the International Ministerial Panel which made policy statements at the High-Level Event: Zero Emissions from Vehicles at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP) currently being held in Paris, France.
During the deliberative session, Minister Peters made a clarion call for the developed world to give technological and financial support to underdeveloped countries so that no country is left behind in reducing gas emissions from transportation. It is reported that between 22-26% of global Green House Gas emissions come from transport.
The introduction of hydrogen fuelled, plug-in and battery powered vehicles will go a very long way in reducing carbon emissions. South Africa is part of the Clean Energy Ministerial and an active partner in the Hybrid Electric Energy Initiative.
The Minister also highlighted how the Department of Science and Technology of the Republic of South Africa has produced the ‘Jewel’, an electric vehicle which with the necessary financing can be taken from Research & Development to commercialisation.
The Hydrofuel cells and Biofuels for both jet and vehicle fuel studies are all part of South Africa’s commitment to zero emissions vehicles initiatives.
