Correctional Services saddened by the passing of two EST officials near Rustenburg
The Department of Correctional Services has learned with shock and great sadness the passing-on of two Correctional Officials who are serving as Emergency Support Team (EST) members today - 3 June 2016. The two correctional officials were transporting an offender to court in Rustenburg, when a truck veered towards their lane resulting in a tragic head-on collusion.
The offender sustained injuries and is currently hospitalised.
The National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Zach Modise, expressed shock at the incident and sent his condolences to the families of the deceased officials. He said: “loosing correctional officials in this manner, is not just tragic, but an unbearable pain to their families, the department and their colleagues. EST officials are highly trained and such an untimely death will definitely leave a huge void.”
The Department sent the Deputy Regional Commissioner of the Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West region, Mr Phiko Mbambo, to the bereaved families of the officials, their colleagues to share condolences and offer support during this difficult time and to also wish the injured inmate currently in hospital a speedy recovery.
