Trade and Industry hosts Seminar on Social and Ethics Committees, 9 Feb

Theme: Getting to Grips with Social and Ethics Committees as a Driver of Value

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), in collaboration with the Companies Tribunal will host a seminar on Social and Ethics Committees.

Date: 9 February 2017
Venue: Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), 1258 Lever Road, Midrand
Time: 8h30 to 17h00

The Social and Ethics Committee (S&EC) is a Board Committee established in terms of the Companies Act 71 of 2008. The S&EC requirement came into effect in May 2011, through Section 72(4) and Regulation 43 of the Companies Act, which requires that all listed public companies, state-owned enterprises and any other company that scores above 500 public interest points to have a social and ethics committee. Broadly, such committees were introduced to ensure that companies are not only profit-driven, but also concern themselves with the sustainability of the communities in which they are located.

The dti and the Companies Tribunal will be hosting a seminar to discuss how S&ECs are implemented in various companies with special emphasis on their impact, contribution to corporate sustainability, and broader functions as stipulated in Regulation 43 of the Companies Act.

The seminar aims to encourage activism and accountability of stakeholders such as labour, consumers and S&EC members. Furthermore, to enhance and raise awareness about the impact of S&ECs in South Africa as well as provide inputs towards the development of generic guidelines into how S&ECs should be implemented. Various experts, NGOs and public and private sector role players are invited to share their experience, knowledge and expertise in the field.
