Committee to conduct oversight visits at three police stations in Sedibeng
Led by the Chairperson, Honourable, Sochayile Khanyile, the Legislature’s (GPL) Portfolio Committee on Community Safety will conduct oversight visits to three Police Stations in the Sedibeng area.
The oversight visits, scheduled for Friday, 9th September 2016 are part of the Committee’s Focus Intervention Study (FIS), titled: “An assessment of the Departmental support to Men as Safety Promoters (MASP), Women as Safety Promoters (WASP) and youth crime prevention desks and the functionality of these organisations as safety promoters in the Province of Gauteng”.
MASP and WASP are found within the Social Crime Prevention (SCP) Unit at SAPS stations. The primary purpose of the unit is to provide professional and voluntary support services to victims of crime, especially gender based violence within Gauteng.
The study is intended to address the following objectives:
- To determine the role of MASP, WASP and youth crime prevention desks towards ensuring the safety of the people of Gauteng.
- To ascertain the effectiveness of these community structures in reducing crime.
- To find out the kind of support provided by GDCS to MASP, WASP and Youth Crime Prevention Desks.
- To determine whether these structures have partnerships with other community organisations dealing with safety and security (e.g., CPF, SAPS, Metro police etc.).
- To find out the challenges that these structures have with carrying out their functions.
- To determine the measures in place to address these challenges.
