Water and Sanitation on winners at National Baswa le Meetse school competitions

Three Northern Cape schools shine at the National Baswa Le Meetse competition

Three schools from Northern Cape emerged winners at the National Baswa le Meetse school competitions hosted by the Department of Water and Sanitation in Benoni from 11 – 12 July 2017.

Tetlanyo Primary School from Kimberley became the runner’s up in the Public Speaking category competing against other learners from the 8 Provinces of South Africa. The three (3) learners, Gerald Moima, Beauty January and Gladys Botsang debated the thorny issue of the challenge of limited access to water and sanitation facilities in some communities due to their socio-economic status. They will each receive a comprehensive bursary to study at any accredited University in South Africa. The bursaries cover the cost of registration, tuition, food and accommodation.

Isagontle Primary School from Kuruman came second in the Eco Schools category and will receive R30 000 worth of material for their school project. The eco school programme is a newly included category into the competition and seeks to address water and sanitation problems in schools by raising awareness, greening of schools and promote good health and hygiene practices. The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) has been mandated to support eco schools and ensure that the schools have sustainable water and sanitation projects.

Ikhaya Primary School from Pixley ka Seme in the Northern Cape attained 3rd position in the Poster category. Bongani Jolla from De Aar scooped R4000 for his school with his drawing depicting a community with good water and sanitation practices.

The 2020 Vision for Water & Education is a school based programme aimed at addressing public education with special focus on learners at basic education level. Expectation is that learners will continue to raise awareness in their families and ultimately encourage a behavioural change for better water use practices in our communities. Learners are the best educators and they are able to change the mindset of their families and entire community.
