Ten days of successful policing in the Mitchell's Plain Cluster

Police attached to the Mitchell's Plain Cluster dealt a blow to criminals during the past ten days during crime prevention operations, starting on Friday 24 June 2016 until Sunday 3 July 2016, resulting to multiple successes.

Forty-three houses were searched for drugs during various operations in the area and a total of 177 arrests were made during this period for various crimes ranging from attempted murder, to possession of firearms and drugs. Drugs seized included the following types and quantities: Heroin: 29 g; Tik: 193 g; 83 Mandrax tablets; 1 unit of Cocaine; and Dagga: 636 g.

One-hundred-and-sixty-seven tracing operations resulted in the arrest of 43 wanted persons. Twenty-four premises with second hand goods were visited and nine shebeen operations were held, resulting in three arrests. A total of 878 030 litres alcohol was seized. Thirty-three traffic fines were issued to the value R16 500 and there were also three arrests for the illegal possession of firearms, and three firearms were confiscated. More details follow below.

An arrest for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition was made in Portlands. On Sunday 2016-06-26 at 15:20 Mitchell's Plain police received information from the community about a firearm being kept at premises in Tugela Street, Portlands. When police searched the premises they discovered silver Weslem Revolver with a black pistol grip with ten rounds. A man aged 26 years was arrested. The suspect faces a charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Two more arrests for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and counterfeit goods were made in Portlands. On Sunday 2016-06-26 about 11:40, Mitchell's Plain police received a complaint of counterfeit goods being manufactured at a house in Windsor Street, Portlands.

Upon arrival police found two men busy filling empty Sunlight and OMO bottles with an unknown powder. Two suspects aged 23 and 21 years were arrested for manufacturing counterfeit goods. Members then continued searching the premises and found a firearm with 14x9mm rounds, as well as two magazines with four rounds which were hidden in a sock. A 35-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and is being investigated by police.

An arrest for the illegal possession of a firearm was made in Atletiek Street, Beacon Valley. On Tuesday 28 June 2016 Mitchell's Plain police were following up on information and searched a house in Atletiek Street, Beacon valley. Police confiscated a 9mm short pistol with a magazine and 7x9mm rounds. A beige bulletproof vest with a SAPS tag and a pair of blue SAPS field dress pants were also recovered. A 19-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

An arrest for pointing of a firearm was made in Harvester road, Westridge. On Saturday 2016-07-02, about 21:00, Mitchell's Plain police attended to a complaint of pointing of a firearm in Harvester Road, Westridge. When police searched the suspect they found a black NZ7S firearm in his possession with a magazine and 8x9mm rounds.

The suspect failed to produce a licence for the firearm and was also found to be under the influence of alcohol. The 55-year-old man was arrested and is expected to appear in court soon. The suspect faces a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and charges related to handling the firearm while under the influence of alcohol.                                                                           

A suspect was arrested for house robbery in Philippi, after a police chase. On Friday 2016-07-01, about 17:45, members of the Maitland Flying Squad spotted a vehicle that had been hijacked in Claremont while driving down Lansdowne road at Lansdown Corner Mall. Police gave chase and the suspect vehicle turned into the premises of the shopping mall in Lansdowne Road.

An SAPS vehicle attempted to intercept the suspect's vehicle, which hit the passenger side door, leaving a police member with injuries. The suspect vehicle came to a stop after colliding with a white Mazda. The suspect alighted from the vehicle and fled, but was shot and arrested by police. He was injured in his right upper leg. The 46-year-old man faces charges relating to hi-jacking, possession of a stolen vehicle, house robbery, attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving.

Another suspect was arrested for the possession of ammunition in Philippi. On Friday 2016-07-01, about 08:30, members of Philippi SAPS were busy with crime prevention duties in Athburg Walk, Hanover Park. They stopped and searched a suspicious person and found 9x9mm rounds of ammunition in his possession. The 41-year-old man faces a charge of possession of ammunition.

All the above suspects are expected to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court on Monday 2016-07-04 on the said charges.
