Telecommunication and Postal Services Committee welcomes Telkom's announcement to stop retrenchments

The Portfolio Committee on Telecommunications and Postal Services welcomes Telkom’s announcement that it will not implement further retrenchments for the next two years. This after the company has cut almost 5 400 jobs in the past two years.

“It is encouraging that, in light of the current conditions, where unemployment is high and the economy is growing at a slow pace, Telkom still manages to maintain financial stability. It is also reassuring to know that the company is committing to increase workers’ salaries by 6% from 1 April 2017,” said Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi, Chairperson of the Committee.

The Committee has also noted the company’s commitment to keep outsourced workers to less than 1 000 over the next two years, as a significant move to ensure job security for current employees.

Ms Kubayi further acknowledged the role played by Telkom management and organised labour to bring about financial stability in the current economic environment.
