President Jacob Zuma congratulates Team South Africa for outstanding performance at Rio Games

President Jacob Zuma has congratulated Team South Africa for an outstanding performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics Games in Brazil.

South Africa has so far produced 10 medals comprising of two Gold, six Silver and two Bronze.

Wayde van Niekerk firstly clinched gold for the country where he made world history by breaking the 17 years old record set by Michael Johnson's mark of 43.18. Van Niekers won the Gold medal at the world record on 43:03 seconds.

This morning, Caster Mokgadi Semenya dramatically won 800m gold medal at 1 minute 55.28 seconds, making this the 25th gold won by South Africa in our country’s Olympic history.

“We are immensely proud of the South African team for their outstanding performance at the Olympics games this year and for making and smashing national and world records. The team has once again put the country on the global map and proved indeed that we are a winning nation. We also thank the people of South Africa for their full support of our athletes,” said President Zuma.
