Water and Sanitation on Stockholm World Water Week

Stockholm World Water Week draws on to an end

The five day long water conference held in Stockholm with experts, practitioners and decision makers has come to its end. The conference covered issues of finance, governance, stewardship, transparency, social network analysis, mainstreaming integrity, as well as policy reforms with regards to water.

Providing the overarching conclusions from the seminars, Dr Torkil Jonch Clausen from SIWI said “The seminars told a story, that water is vital for sustained growth and jobs but growth needs to be managed to harvest the opportunities and reduce the threats to water.”

Mr Clausen also added “that the conference started in 2016 to live the 2030 agenda of discussing the link between the water SDG 6 and the growth SDG 8 and will continue the agenda in 2017 linking the water SDG 6 and the sustainable consumption and production SDG 12 and all the other SDGs.”

During the closing session the best poster award was presented and the winner was Mr Philli Kruse from the Technical University Dortmund for his poster on “Managing extremes, Sustainable Planning for Water Resources in San Diego.” Mr Kruse`s poster won on the basis that it was relevant to the SDGs and addressed criteria for planning, prioritization and it had interface between policy and practice.

The week has looked at sustainable growth through the lenses of inclusiveness, equity, shared benefits and has also highlighted the importance of collaboration, transparency, partnership, knowing the value of water as well as trans-boundary cooperation and fast tracking implementation.

The conference next year will focus on “Waste and Water”- in order to show the linkages with ranges of other water and non-water issues such as energy and food.
