Minister Desmond van Rooyen on his appointment as Finance Minister

Statement by the new Finance Minister Desmond van Rooyen

It is with great honour that I approach this important task bestowed upon me by the Honourable President Jacob Zuma. I would like to thank Minister Nhlanhla Nene for his tireless efforts and leaving behind a solid institution that is at the centre of our government and the economy of our country.

I follow a line of remarkable leaders. They had also faced this moment, each at a critical juncture in the country’s history. Each made lasting and important contributions to our common purpose in ensuring that we realise the developmental agenda of our country.

I take this job at a very challenging time. The global economy has slowed down and most indicators are not pointing in the favourable direction particularly in emerging markets. The economy of our own country, South Africa has also experienced challenging times. But the fight against the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality is at the centre of this government’s programme of action.

I will endeavour to ensure every policy is directed at creating favourable investment conditions that will lead to the development of South Africa for all South Africans.

I look forward to working with my colleagues and my department to achieve our mandate. Over the next few days, I will be meeting with the National Treasury team and only then will I engage the media meaningfully.
