On Tuesday, 12 July 2016, the Members of the North West Provincial Legislature led by Premier Supra Mahumapelo and Executive Council described the late MEC for the Department of Social Development, Kgakgamatso Nkewu as a selfless leader, a gender activist who sacrificed her life for changing lives of the people in the North West Province. This came after the Legislature held a Special House Sitting to honour and pay tribute to the late MEC Nkewu.
The late MEC Nkewu, who was also a Treasurer of the African National Congress in the North West province, met her ultimate death on Thursday, 07 July 2016, during a car accident near Vryburg that also led to a death of a cyclist and seriously injuring two members of the VIP Protection Unit.
Family members of the late MEC Nkewu, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Hon. Thandi Modise and different community members also attended the Special Sitting.
Premier Supra Mahumapelo said the people of the North West Province and the African National Congress has lost a leader who was energetic, visionary, resolute, hardworking and principled.
“On behalf of the People’s Province of Bokone-Bophirima, we have lost a dedicated and selfless leader to transform the lives of our people. She was obedient and very principled when it came to dealing with challenges of our people or the organisations concerned.
To the family, they must know that in these difficult times, they must trust the Almighty and know that they are not alone but we are with them as government and the people of the province. She will surely be remembered in the centuries to come,” said Premier Mahumapelo.
A Member of the Democratic Alliance in the Legislature, Hon. Jacqueline Theologo said MEC Nkewu was a very respectable and humble leader, with the most beautiful and friendly smile.
“Even when we differed in the Legislature, she was never rude but a person who would listen to your point and engage on the matter. We could relate to her very well and communicate with, as she was a formidable woman whom we loved to have in the Legislature Committees’ meetings and oversights. We also hoped that she could be the best MEC for the Department of Social Development.
“When we met for the first time during an oversight visit at the new Mahikeng Airport, we spoke about our health and children. She was also a family person, a mother who was very protective and caring for her loved ones and always emphasised on being dedicated to family first and then work. We spoke about importance of family as we were always away from our families during our course as leaders,” said Hon. Theologo.
A Leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Hon. Betty Diale also sent condolences to the family of the late MEC Nkewu and the people of the Bokone Bophirima.
“We are saddened by this loss, and humble ourselves to say, if it’s the will of the Lord, then we shall accept his word. May the Soul of the late MEC Nkewu Rest in Peace,” said Hon. Ntsangani.
