Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Baleka Mbete, will engage face-to-face with senior citizens of KwaDukuza on issues affecting them in the 21 years of democracy.
About 500 elderly people from Thuthukani Day Care Centre will converge for a special end of the year engagement hosted by Parliament in collaboration with KwaDukuza Local Municipality.
The engagement with Hon. Mbete aims at providing a public participation platform for the senior citizens to engage on issues affecting them which will in turn influence the work of Parliament in conducting oversight and assessing how the legislation passed contributes to the transformation of lives of the citizens, in particular the senior citizens.
The engagement is part of initiatives to implement policy priorities of the 5th Parliament which includes, among others, achieving more meaningful engagement with communities, strategic meetings with specific stakeholders in society and conducting an impact assessment of legislation passed since 1994.
Parliament’s constitutional mandate requires that it provides meaningful opportunities for the involvement of the people in the legislative processes. Parliament is placed at the core of public discourse and carries its function through the creation of platforms of engagement with the public and sectors of society, particularly the marginalised.
Tomorrow’s engagement will serve as the very first session in a series of community meetings that will be facilitated to engage the South African citizens.
The event will take place as follows:
Date: Tuesday, 15 December 2015
Time: 10h00
Venue: Groundtville Market Sports Grounds, Ward 10, Kwadukuza
