The Government and people of South Africa convey their deepest sympathies and condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of Sri Lanka following a mudslide that killed at least 200 people and left over half a million Sri Lankans displaced.
The flood is the worst to hit the country since the one in May 2003 that killed 250 people and destroyed about 10,000 homes. The Island also experienced a landslide last year that killed more than 100 people.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation’s Consular Services division is in contact with the South African High Commission in Colombo and so far no South African citizen has been affected.
The South African Government extends its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident and further wishes the injured a speedy recovery.
