Social Development takes Disability Rights Awareness Month to Mpumalanga

The Deputy Minister of Social Development, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu will tomorrow, November 19, 2016 officially open the Dundonald Disability Centre in Dundonald Village, Mpumalanga.

The Centre which was started by a community member who is wheelchair bound will serve as a one-stop Centre for persons with disabilities in the area, to continue with their income generating activities, serve as a base from which they can expand their activism and their local economic development activities.

Dundonald village, like many rural areas in South Africa does not have enough facilities that cater for persons with disabilities. The centre will provide essential services like accommodation, home-based care for the blind, deaf and those with mental and physical disabilities.

DRAM is an awareness campaign which takes place between November 3 and December 3; to increase awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities as equal citizens. The campaign also seeks to accelerate equal access to socio-economic opportunities for persons with disabilities by making information available and accessible.
