Social Development launches Report on Basic Income support for 18 to 60 year olds, 13 Dec

Social Development in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation will be launching a Report on Basic Income support for 18 to 60 year olds

The Department of Social Development in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Joint Fund appointed an independent panel of experts to conduct extensive research, which includes both economic and social policy experts.

Economic hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic led to a decline in employment which saw South Africa losing a substantial number of formal and informal jobs during the year 2020.

This economic downturn coupled with job losses propelled the discussion on income support to the forefront of current socio-economic policy debates.

It is in this context that the Department of Social Development will on Monday, December 13, launch the research report on Basic Income support by hosting a webinar to discuss the findings of the report.

The webinar seeks to present findings of the Expert Panel Report on Basic Income Support in the country and to discuss the social and economic context which affects many South Africans. It will also look at the economic impact on further extension of income support, creation of jobs, expansion of social support and dependency.

This high level discussion will comprise of representatives from the South African Government, the United Nations Joint SDG Fund in South Africa, Civil Society, Private Sector and Social Grant Beneficiaries.

Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the webinar planned as follows:
