Water and Sanitation on National Youth Water Prize competition

Sitintile Secondary School to represent Mpumalanga in National Youth Water Prize Competition

Sitintile Secondary School from Kanyamazane in the City of Mbombela will represent the Mpumalanga Province in the South African Youth Water Prize (SAYWP) national competition after conquering the provincial competition that was held at Valencia Community Hall on Tuesday, 09 May 2017.

Thandi Khoza, Lindelwa Sambo and Siphokazi Magagula from Sitintile Secondary School came up tops with their innovative project that deals with water conservation, water purification and the re-use of grey water. Second prize went to Khaliphani Secondary School with Mandlesive Secondary School bagging the third prize.

The South African Youth Water Prize is the Department of Water and Sanitation’s project to enhance the interest of learners in water and sanitation related careers and address the skills shortage challenge in the country. The SAYWP competition encourages learners to identify water and sanitation related problems in their schools or communities, conduct research, recommend and implement solutions. This requires the learners to be innovative to come up with workable solutions.

The SAYWP is part of the Department’s broader 2020 Vision for Water and Sanitation Education Programme (VFWSEP) which is a school based education programme which promotes water use efficiency, water quality management, awareness creation about alien invasive plants and their impact on water resources and health and hygiene. The programme is implemented in collaboration with the Department of Education.

The learners from Sitintile will now compete with other provincial winners for the coveted prize of representing the country in Stockholm during the World Water Week.
