Signing of Memorundum of Understanding between Sport and Recreation South Africa and Department of Basic Education to improve school sports

School sport is the ultimate platform from which our country’s professional athletes get their start and from which South African Sport can be transformed from the predominant minority to the inclusive majority. Through School sport, learners are able to choose their preferred sporting code making it a vital cog in the development of our Nation’s sporting greats.

In 2012 the Minister of Sport and Recreation SA signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Minister Basic Education with regard to the implementation of the school sport programme. The MoU has been in existence for five years and was reviewed through a consultative process which was completed in December 2017. This MoU is now due for renewal in order to continue the partnership with DBE to offer sporting opportunities to all

The 5th Transformation Status Report by the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) was recently handed over to the Minister of Sport and Recreation, Ms Tokozile Xasa. The report identified challenges in the administration of sport at school level and came up with a number of recommendations on how to improve school sport as the bedrock of sports development in the country. The report recommended that the Sport and Recreation SA and Department of Basic Education work together to address challenges that are currently hampering the successful implementation of the school sport programme.

The Minister of Sport and Recreation SA, Ms Tokozile Xasa MP and the Minister of Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshekga MP, will hold a joint media briefing where both Departments will sign a Memorandum of Understanding that clearly articulates areas of responsibility, alignment of resources and the implementation of the school sport programmes the details are as follows:
