Parliament on shortlist for Electoral Commission vacancy

Shortlist for Electoral Commission vacancy

The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs notes the announcement by a panel established in terms of section 6 of the Electoral Commission Act, as led by the Chief Justice, for the shortlisting of candidates to fill a vacancy within the Electoral Commission following the resignation of Ms Raenette Taljaard.

The names on the shortlist should stand the test of public scrutiny and the Committee is of the view that the IEC requires men and women of integrity as it continues to deliver credible elections.

The Committee therefore further notes the announcement by the panel to allow interested persons and organisations to comment on the shortlisted candidates. This progressive move seeks to enable and enhance participatory democracy and ensure that the preferred candidate will get universal acceptance.

This move further strengthens the legitimacy of the Electoral Commission which is an indispensable pillar in delivering on the mandate of the institution. The Committee encourages all South Africans to participate in this process as a way of reinforcing one of the most important institutions of democracy.

Comments must reach the Office of the Chief Justice by no later than 10 February 2016. The CVs of the shortlisted candidates can be found here: https://www.judiciary.org.zaiec.html.
