Parliament concerned with absence of chairperson and deputy chairperson of SAPO Board

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) today sent the delegation of the South African Post Office (SAPO) away due to the absence of the chairperson and deputy chairperson of the SAPO Board.

The chairperson and his deputy only sent through an apology to the Committee yesterday whereas they had been invited to appear before SCOPA on 19 February 2016. SCOPA is also dissatisfied with the reasons provided yesterday for the absence of the Board chairperson whose position comes with the responsibility of being accountable to Parliament as per the Public Finance Management Act.

The chairperson of the South African Post Office Board was the administrator before being appointed the chairperson of the Board in August 2015 and would therefore be the best person to account for the annual report and financial statements of the Post Office for 2014/15 compared to the chief executive officer and the chief financial officer who were only appointed in January 2016.

The Committee will request the South African Post Office to appear before it again to account for the year under review.
