Minister Dipuo Peters on appointment of new SANRAL CEO, Skhumbuzo Macozoma

The Minister of Transport, Mme Dipuo Peters, welcomes the appointment of Mr Skhumbuzo Macozoma, as the new CEO of SANRAL.

Mr Macozoma appointment comes after Nazir Alli - who served as CEO since its establishment of SANRAL in 1998 - has retired after almost two decades at the helm.

Minister Peters wishes to thank Mr Alli for the contribution he has made towards the building of a world-class national road network.

“I am sure I speak not only on behalf of Government but also on behalf of road users when I say Mr Alli has delivered good quality national roads which form part of the country’s critical infrastructure. Without good national roads, the economy would choke. As Mr Alli goes into retirement, we wish him and his family well,” said the Minister.

“I believe that with his experience, Mr Macozoma is a well-resourced person to guide the SANRAL and ensure that it fulfils its mandate to manage South Africa’s road infrastructure, while also incorporating good governance, added Minister Peters.

Furthermore the Minister said as a professional engineer and with his wealth of knowledge in the engineering sector, Mr Macozoma will be welcomed within the broader engineering sector, the construction industry and the investor community.

"Mr Macozoma brings strong professional credentials and an impressive track record of leadership and service in the industry. “His appointment comes at a crucial time, when the SANRAL is in the process of implementing some of its major projects such as the Moloto Road, N2 Wildcoast Highway building,  and the upgrading of the N3, which is the busiest road freight corridor in South Africa,” said the Minister.

Mr Macozoma holds a BSc (Civil Engineering) and a MSc in the same field. He was the Chief Officer: Transport and Logistics of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee in 2008 to 2010 and had served as a Transport Manager in the same Committee from 2007 to 2008. Prior to that, he was Chief Director: Integrated Infrastructure Network Development in the National Department of Transport (2003 - 2007) and had also worked as a Project Manager and Research Engineer for the CSIR from 1993 to 2002.

He also served as the Managing Director of the Johannesburg Roads Agency. Currently, he is the CEO of the Electronic Tolling Company and has in the past served as a non-executive director of SANRAL.

“His previous positions in the past make him a well-rounded executive who is best placed to lead SANRAL into the future. We look forward to working with him and wish him the best in his new role,” Minister Peters concluded.
