Deputy Minister Luwellyn Landers co-chairs SADC meeting in Maputo, 4 to 5 Aug

Deputy Minister Landers to co-chair the 18th meeting of the SADC Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation

International Relations and Cooperation Deputy Minister Luwellyn Landers will participate in the SADC meeting of the Ministerial Committee on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, scheduled for 4 to 5 August 2016 in Maputo, Republic of Mozambique.

South Africa is the current Outgoing Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, with Mozambique as the Chair and Tanzania the Incoming Chair.

The Ministerial Committee of the Organ (MCO) comprises Ministers responsible for Foreign Affairs, Defence, Public and State Security from SADC Member States. The MCO Meeting will be preceded by an Extraordinary MCO on Gender-Based Violence, which will take place on 4 August 2016 to consider the prevalence of Gender-Based Violence in the region.

The SADC MCO meets annually to review progress in the implementation of its previous decisions and the operationalisation of its various sub-structures. The MCO will also consider the reports of both the Interstate Politics and Diplomacy Committee (ISPDC) and the Interstate Defence and Security Committee (ISDSC), as well as the current political and security situation in the SADC region.
