Road Traffic Management welcomes truck driver's imprisonment

The Road Traffic Management Corporation welcomes the sentence handed on the truck driver responsible for the death of former Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane.

The driver, Mr Amukelani Rikhotso was sentenced to six years in prison on Friday.

The minister and his two bodyguards were killed in March last year.

Their car crashed into Amukelani Rikhotso’s truck as he made an illegal U-turn on the N1 between Polokwane and Mokopane.

Rikhotso pleaded guilty to charges of culpable homicide, driving under the influence, and failure to obey road traffic signs.

His driver's licence was suspended for six months and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The sentence comes as the owner of a truck that killed 24 people in Field's Hill near Pinetown prepares to appear in Verulam Magistrate Court on Friday (August 12, 2016).

Mr Gregory Govender has been charged under the National Traffic Act after it was found that the vehicle that caused the crash onSeptember 5, 2013 was not roadworthy.

The driver of that vehicle, Mr Sandler May, is currently serving an eight year sentence after he was found guilty on 24 counts of culpable homicide.

The RTMC reiterates it's warning to truck owners,  drivers and other motorists that reckless and negligent driving is a criminal offence.

All road users must obey the rules of road at all times or face consequences.

It is the duty of the public transport operators to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy. Failure to do this is punishable regardless of who was driving the vehicle at time of the incident.
