RIP Ronnie Mamoepa

Former Robben Island prisoner and former member of the Gauteng provincial legislature Ronnie Mamoepa has passed away.

Mr Mamoepa was a highly regarded and accomplished public servant and veteran communicator who served the African National Congress and various departments in government with distinction.

Mr Mamoepa has served as Chief Director: Communications, departmental also as a spokesperson for Minister Dlamini Zuma at Foreign Affairs from 2000 to 2009. Prior to this, he served as chief director: Communications for both Presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma before being transferred to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation. Mr Mamoepa’s communication experience included serving as head of communications for the ANC Regional Executive Committee, and as head of communications and spokesperson for the first Gauteng Premier between 1994 and 1996. He has also served as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and in 1998 was selected as a South African candidate for the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowship in Philadelphia, United States (US). During his visit he was exposed to high-level communication in various state agencies including the White House and the offices of a number of US governors.

Mr Mamoepa met his death whilst serving as the Spokesperson of the Deputy President of South Africa, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa.

Government Communication and Information System will on Wednesday, 26 July 2017 hold a Memorial Service in honour of  Mr Ronnie Mamoepa.

The memorial service will be attended by the Minister of Communications, Ayanda Dlodlo, the GCIS management and government communicators from three spheres of government.

Condolence books will also be placed at GCIS and Union Buildings for anyone who may wish to come and give a message to the family pre and post the memorial service.
