Richard Branson out to set world record in Western Cape this weekend
Billionaire business man, Richard Branson, is calling on South African kitesurfers to break a world record this weekend. Alan Winde, MEC of Economic Opportunities, said the Virgin Kitesurfing Amarda takes place at Dolphin Beach this weekend.
The event seeks to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest parade of kitesurfers.
Branson led the launch of this initiative in the United Kingdom in 2013, which raised over R1 million for charity. In 2014, kitesurfers in Spain set the current world record, with 352 participants.
MEC Winde encouraged the city’s kite-surfers to join the attempt, all proceeds of which will go to charity.
“This is excellent marketing for our region, which has developed an international reputation as an adventure sport destination. We are well known in particular as a great place to learn to kitesurf, and I am sure this event will contribute to raising our profile further. During promotion for the initiative, Richard Branson describes Cape Town as an ‘iconic kitesurfing destination’, with the beautiful ‘Table Mountain as a backdrop’. I am looking forward to joining the celebrations when the Western Cape sets this new world record.”
