Free State Arts and Culture embarks on Reading Festival, 5 to 9 Sept

In celebrating Literacy Week 2016, the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will embark on a Reading Festival to take place from 5-9 September 2016 at the Lourier Park Community Library in Bloemfontein. Literacy Week is celebrated throughout the country and annually from 1-7 September.

The library fraternity in South Africa will engage in different activities during this time in celebration of books and reading. Planned events include school children participating in competitions from local library to municipal, district and provincial levels.

The competitions entail:

  • Establishment of Reading clubs in public libraries with children from ages 9 to 14.
  • Reading Quiz for learners in grades 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9.
  • Spelling Bee for learners in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6
  • Reading aloud for learners in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6
  • Public Speaking to be conducted by Grade 9 learners
  • Spelling Bee for Departmental officials.

For the first time, Sesotho Spelling Bee will be part of the Reading Festival competition for the grade 3 learners. Fingerspelling for our hearing disabled grade 9 learners is also a first for this competition.

The district winners will participate at the Provincial final competitions on the following dates:

5 September (Grade 9 learners – Public Speaking and Reading Quiz as well as Fingerspelling for Grade 9 learners)

6 September (Grade 3 learners – Reading Aloud, Reading Quiz, Spelling Bee + Sesotho Spelling Bee + Spelling Bee for officials of the Department). The South African Book Development Council will on this date also have an item on Storytelling and a session on Wordathon for adults at the Lourier Park Community Library.

7 September (Grade 4 learners – Reading Aloud, Reading Quiz, Spelling Bee)
8 September (Grade 5 learners – Reading Aloud, Reading Quiz, Spelling Bee)
9 September (Grade 6 learners – Reading Aloud, Reading Quiz, Spelling Bee)

Venue: Lourier Park Community Library, Bloemfontein.
Time: The Programme commences at 8h30 for 9h00 on all days.
