Gauteng launches R237 million Rehabilitation Project on R28
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi launched a R237 million project aimed at rehabilitating the R28 between Sebokeng and Westonaria, south west of Johannesburg.
“The single carriageway provides a bypass for road traffic from the south of Johannesburg to the N12 and the North West Province. It essentially supports the agricultural and mining sectors of the economy,” said Vadi.
He indicated that the project scope include significant road works along 29 kilometres of the R28; reinstating road markings and signage; replacing damaged signs and guardrails; clearing the road reserve and drainage structures, and cutting overgrown grass along the route.
Vadi said that the construction of road shoulders will improve motorised, cyclist and pedestrian traffic safety, and will result in increased motorized road user capacity.
The R28 had degraded over the years due to increased road usage by heavy duty trucks, particularly from the mines and farms in the area.
The project is scheduled to be completed over 24 months and will reduce travelling time and ensure improved road safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
The project is designed to be labour intensive and preference will be given to local SMMEs to meet the 30 percent sub-contracting requirements. Local labour employed on site will include females, youth and persons with disabilities.
