Public hearings on the National Credit Amendment Bill (5 February to 8 February)
The Portfolio Committee on Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature will hold public hearings in the Eastern Cape Province from 5 to 8 February to get public input on the National Credit Amendment Bill. This Bill is an amendment to the National Credit Act of 2005, which came into effect in 2007 with the aim to address and prevent over-indebtedness of consumers. The Bill has been dubbed the Debt Intervention Bill as it intends to provide relief to low-income debtors who remain in debt trap as they are unable to qualify for, or afford, existing debt relief measures.
