MEC Alan Winde on consumer rights awareness

Province-wide consumer rights workshops kick off in March

Today marks World Consumer Rights Day (15 March 2017).

Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, said that to promote awareness of consumer rights, the Provincial Office of the Consumer Protector (OCP) is hosting a programme of action across the Western Cape this month.

To observe the day, the OCP today (15 March 2017) conducted a consumer rights exhibition in conjunction with the City of Cape Town’s Ombudsman office. Various consumer protection authorities, including the Public Protector, participated in the event.

The OCP will present information sessions across the province to reach out to consumers and business on the following topics:

  • The nine consumer rights as contained in the Consumer Protection Act (CPA);
  • Misleading advertising;
  • The legally prescribed six month statutory warranty in terms of the CPA;
  • The challenges posed by over indebtedness;
  • Adverse Credit Listings and your rights in this respect.

Minister Winde said: “We have regulations in place, such as the Consumer Protection Act, to safe-guard consumers against unethical practices. For these laws to be effective, consumers must be aware of their rights. This is why the Office of the Consumer Protector will be hosting information sessions across the province over the next few weeks.”
