Water and Sanitation on intervention at Makana District Municipality

Progress on intervention by DWS in Makana District Municipality

The Department of Water and Sanitation’s (DWS) intervention at the Makana District Municipality in the Eastern Cape has resulted in the earlier completion of several projects which include the Electrical Supply Integrity venture as well as the major pump stations having been capacitated.

The intervention included the Raw Water Rising Main from Settlers to Howiesons Poort which has been fixed. With the projects referred to having progressed somewhat, a lot more still has to be done. One concern is that both the Mayfield and Belmont Waste Water Treatment plants continue to discharge substandard effluent because of lack of funds.

The James Kleynhans Water Treatment Works, which is funded through the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant (RBIG), is stalling because the municipality is still looking for funds.
Generally, good progress being made on the intervention is noticeable despite the municipality’s funding being unavailable. What is certain is that additional funding is needed to complete some projects.

Road Map meetings will be convened during June 2016 to plan ahead.
