President Zuma to attend NEPAD, African Peer Review Mechanism and Peace and Security meetings in Addis Ababa

President Jacob Zuma will today, 29 January 2016 join other Heads of State and Government today in key meetings that take place ahead of the the 26th extraordinary Summit of the African Union.

The President arrived in Addis Ababa on the 28th of January 2016.

In his capacity as chairperson of the Presidential Infrastructure Championing Initiative, President Zuma will present a progress report on infrastructure development to the 34th New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee (HSGOC) meeting.

NEPAD is central to the continent’s transformation efforts as the flagship socio-economic programme of the AU. It provides a strategic framework for a continental socio-economic development programme, and serves as an integrated programme driver for the African Union and its organs in key areas such as infrastructure development, agriculture and food security, science and technology and human resource development among others.

The President will also attend the Special Summit of the Committee of Participating Heads of State and Government of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) which takes place under the theme ‘’Revitalising the APRM to Strengthen Governance in Africa’’.

The President is scheduled to address the summit on the integration of the APRM into the AU. The purpose of the APRM is to improve governance across the continent. The formation of the APRM was an expression of Africa’s desire to deepen democracy and run transparent and accountable governments.

President Zuma will also attend the meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council which will discuss extensively the state of peace and security in the continent.

The AU Summit is taking place under the theme ‘African Year of Human Rights with a Particular Focus on the Rights of Women’.
