President Jacob Zuma addresses COSAS Convention, 18 Mar

President Jacob Zuma will today 18 March 2016 address the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) Learn Without Fear convention rally at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg.

The campaign is aimed at promoting safety in schools to contribute to an improved teaching and learning environment.

Violence, drug and substance abuse, bullying and corporal punishment continue to be a problem in many schools. A School Safety Summit was convened on 09-10 December 2015 to allow for an honest conversation between the Basic Education stakeholders, including teachers, learners and parents through their organizations.  Stakeholders committed to work together to root-out violence, drug and substance abuse and other anti-social behavior in our schools.

The event takes place during a critical year which marks the 40th anniversary of the June 16 1976 student uprising in protest against Bantu Education and the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in black schools by the apartheid government.

Details of the event are as follows:
Date: Friday, 18 March 2016
