Presidency releases second progress report on implementation of Presidential Employment Stimulus

The Presidency has today released its second progress report on implementation of the Presidential Employment Stimulus, which was announced by President Ramaphosa in his address to a joint sitting of Parliament on 15 October 2020.

As part of the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan, the Presidential Employment Stimulus is designed to respond to the rise in unemployment caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Presidential Employment Stimulus supports a range of opportunities through the expansion of public employment as well as job retention in vulnerable sectors. In addition to employment opportunities, the stimulus provides crucial support for livelihoods in the creative sector, the agricultural sector and the early childhood development sector.

Eleven national departments and all nine provinces are responsible for implementation of programmes supported through the employment stimulus. As the attached progress report shows, more than 600,000 opportunities have been supported to date or are currently open for recruitment/applications.

Applications for the ECD Employment Stimulus Relief Fund are open until 19 February 2021. This programme will provide income support to early childhood development practitioners, helping to protect the sector from the impact of COVID-19. ECD centres are invited to apply for support on www.dsd.gov.za or by calling a dedicated toll-free contact centre on 0800 089 666.
