North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has expressed sadness over the reported death of five children killed in a fire accident in Ramatlabama on Sunday.
“We send our heartfelt condolences to the family affected by this tragedy. We again appeal strongly to parents to be extra careful with the safety of those under their care,” cautioned Premier Mahumapelo.
According to police, the children aged between three and 16 years, died when their house caught fire on Sunday.
It is alleged that a 32-year-old woman left six children inside the house and went to a nearby tavern.
Police say community members managed to rescue one of the children.
The woman was reportedly fetched from the tavern but collapsed on her arrival at the scene, and was taken to hospital.
Police say the woman will be charged with negligence as soon as she is discharged from hospital.
Investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
