Premier Ace Magashule leads International Nelson Mandela Day programme in Bethlehem

In 2009, the United Nations officially declared 18 July as the International Nelson Mandela Day. Late ANC and South African President Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918;

Today, when President Nelson Mandela would have turned 98 years old, the Free State government spread across many parts of the province to celebrate and honour the legacy of our late President;

The 2016 International Nelson Mandela Day was given a special flavour when it was coordinated congruently with the Free State service delivery model; Operation Hlasela;

The community of Bethlehem, in the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, was also visited today as part of the 2016 International Nelson Mandela Day activities; 

The collaboration between various provincial departments, the national Department of Public Enterprises, state owned company SAFCOL, Dihlabeng Local Municipality, as well as other role players from the public and private sectors, culminated into a comprehensive programme that was felt throughout the community of Bethlehem and surrounding areas;

The following were some of the activities that took place in Bethlehem today as party of the Free State International Nelson Mandela Day programme;

Official opening of the Bethlehem Combined and Ntsu Secondary Schools

  • These two schools were offered to the community through the Accelerated School Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI). They were asbestos structures and have been rebuilt using modern, reliable and acceptable technology;
  1. Cleaning and renovation of Bohlokong Hospice;
  2. Handing over of 67 blankets at Bohlokong Hospice;
  3. Physically build a house for a pensioner who has been without a proper home for years;
  4. Restore the dignity of young girls through distribution of sanitary towels in schools;
  5. Allow members of the community to interact with government through a mass meeting, engagements with the Premier and other leaders as well as exhibitions by government departments, entities and state owned companies; and
  6. Painting, cleaning and gardening work at various institutions.
