Operation Fiela: police arrest one hundred and sixty eight (168) suspects and seize 39 000 litres of alcohol
As police are intensifying crime prevention operations for the festive season under “Operation Fiela”, a total of 168 suspects were arrested between 17 and 18 December 2015 and more than 39 000 litres of alcohol were seized. Thirty (30) of these suspects were arrested for alcohol-related offences and 25 suspects for drug-related crimes. Fines to the tune of R53,000 were issued for traffic offences. Other suspects were arrested for various crimes including driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of illegal firearms, possession of suspected stolen property, theft and undocumented persons.
Some of the focus areas for these operations included patrols in and around shopping malls and stop-and-search operations targeting illegal firearms, drugs and alcohol related crimes.
At the same time police are also interacting with members of the community to sensitise them about crimes that are mostly committed during the festive season. Members of the community are also urged to report suspicious people and vehicles.
