Parliament commits to supporting schools in 2016

Portfolio committee on Basic Education commits to supporting schools even more in the New Year

The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education has committed to supporting schools even more in 2016, especially those schools that are situated in the struggling districts.

The Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Nomalungelo Gina, urged all stakeholders to work hard in ensuring that the year ahead is a success.

“The Committee pledges its support to all teachers, learners, parents and civil society. We encourage those provinces that did not do well to put all their effort to increasing the pass rate. The focus for the year should not be on Grade 12, but improvement of performance for the whole system,” Ms Gina said.

The schools reopen tomorrow following the announcement of Grade 12 results last year where the country achieved a 70.7% pass mark. The Eastern Cape was the least achieving province with about 56% of matriculants passing in 2015.

Ms Gina wished teachers, learners and parents a great school year ahead. “This administration is committed to education, and for our children we will not compromise,” she said.
