The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation through the Free State provincial museums services hosted a Public Speaking competition ahead of Casual Day under the theme “OR Tambo Centenary: Social Integration Through People with Disabilities in Realization of an Inclusive Society.” Casual Day has become an excellent opportunity for corporate team building, whilst also making a contribution to one of the country’s most vulnerable sectors of society; persons with disabilities.

The event was attended by participants from Bartemia Special School, Pholoho Special School, Tswellang Special School, CUT disability structure, Motheo TVET disability structure and the representatives for people with disabilities in the community.

The event took place as follows:

Date: 25 August 2017
Time: 10:00
Venue: Old Presidency Museum, Mangaung

The programme was officially opened with the National Anthem and the Public Speaking competition was held amongst the various schools and youth organizations during the day on different categories.

The winners were as follows:

1) Sello Diphoko (Bartemia Special School)
2) Ntefeng Ledimo (Tswellang Special School)
3) Thandani Mosebetsi (Bartemia Special School)

“It is our responsibility as a department to engage young people in critiquing, challenging, and shaping the world around them. Museums offer unique spaces for having complex conversations about contemporary ideas that cannot often take place in other spaces such as schools. In celebrating the legacy of O.R Tambo we encourage robust debates and the contestation of ideas among our youth” said Free State MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Me Mathabo Leeto.
