MEC Mathabo Leeto opens new library in Orangeville, 19 Dec

The Free State MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mrs. NS Leeto together with the Free State Premier Mr. Ace Magashule will officially open a newly-built community library in Orangeville on 19 December 2015. This state-of-the-art library will provide information services and cater for the reading needs of the community free of charge. The construction of the library was financed with a grant received from the National Department of Arts and Culture.

This well-furnished library also boasts children and adult lending sections, a reading area, reference section, an activity hall, computer room and a toy library. The toy library service will not only support early childhood development but games such as chess, scrabble, monopoly and others will cater for the needs of the older child and adults. Computer games will enhance this service.

The computer room is equipped with 25 computers providing free internet access, e-mail and word processing facilities. Ten tablet computers will be available for downloading and reading e-books and e-periodicals as well as newspapers. Access to study materials such as past examination papers will also be freely available.

Moreover, a Wi-Fi area with seating facilities for users with their own equipment will also be available. A community vegetable garden was established and community organizations will be invited to develop and maintain the garden as a food basket for the needy.

The following services will be provided:

  • Book lending services with approximately 10 00 titles
  • Reference services with a hard copy reference collection of encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, yearbooks, etc.
  • e-publications and access to Internet reference resources
  • Newspapers and periodicals in hard copy and digital formats
  • Community and Business Information Services
  • Government Information Services
  • Educational Toy Library Services
  • Storytelling, reading clubs and community based literary activities will be hosted in the Activity Hall

“Libraries are at the centre of promoting active citizenship and broad-based leadership through information dissemination, promotion of reading and global competitiveness. Toy libraries also play an important role in the early childhood development of children. As part of our work, we will soon offer training on the effective use of educational toys to caretakers of young children,” said MEC NS Leeto.
