Gauteng Health launches Automated Pathology Laboratory at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, 20 Jun

Official Launch: NHLS Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital’s Automated Pathology Laboratory on the 20th of June 2017

The National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) is extremely excited and proud of the newly implemented, automated pathology laboratory at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) and invite you to attend its official launch and “go live” ceremony at CMJAH NHLS Laboratory, Area 454 Green block from 13h00 on 20 June 2017.

This fully automated, customised pathology laboratory solution is the first-of-its-kind in Africa, featuring unique state-of-the-art instrument technology. The Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (formerly Johannesburg General Hospital) is an accredited central hospital in Johannesburg with 1,086 beds. The hospital’s professional and support staff exceeds 4,000 people. The hospital offers a full range of tertiary, secondary and highly specialised services. The value of providing these services to Gauteng’s population, in addition to neighbouring provinces, cannot be overestimated. The hospital also serves as a referral hospital for a number of hospitals in its referral chain.

One of the mainstays of a central hospital service is an excellent diagnostic pathology laboratory, as Pathology results inform 70% of medical decision making. At the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital - currently the biggest NHLS Core Laboratory and reference laboratory within the NHLS, more than 4000 samples are processed per day, which equates to more than 300,000 test results generated each month.

The personalised laboratory automation provided by Roche Diagnostics has ensured that the laboratory is able to provide state-of-the-art diagnostic services to the hospital with improved turnaround times and efficiency gains with very low wastage.

The hospital also serves as the main teaching hospital for the University of the Witwatersrand. The institution provides the service base for undergraduate and post-graduate training in all areas of health professions. The joint appointed personnel produce world-class research and collaborate with several universities.
