In an effort to accelerate monitoring of the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP), the North West Department of Education and Sport Development bought 17 brand new vehicles to service all area offices in the provinces.
The new vehicles worth a total cost R2million are Ford Ikon sedans funded by a conditional grant from National Treasury and serve a top up to the existing 27 vehicles that were procured in the previous financial years, some of which were damaged.
The vehicles were well received by the NSNP coordinators and monitors in the districts.
The departmental transport unit also conducted induction to the NSNP coordinators on the management and utilisation of the state vehicles.
Speaking to the NSNP manager Mr. Kaizer Modisane he says the vehicles will be utilised to monitor and support all the schools in terms of feeding learners. This is to ensure that learner’s received meals as per prescribed menu options in which three food groups (starch, protein vegetables or fruits) are served on daily basis. With these vehicles a school must be visited at least once a quarter. Coordinators will also enable schools to comply with menu options.
NSNP aims to enhance the learning capacity of learners through the provision of a healthy meal at schools and feeds a total of 707 886 learners in 1378 quintile 1-3 schools in the province.
