North West Legislature hosts feedback Session for Arts, Culture and Tourism Sectoral Parliament in Jericho, 4 Mar

On Friday, 4 March 2016, the North West Provincial Legislature will be hosting a Feedback Session for the Arts, Culture and Tourism Sectoral Parliament in Jericho Multipurpose Centre in Madibeng Local Municipality at 09h00. The feedback session is aimed at addressing Arts, Culture and Tourism issues raised during the Tourism Sectoral Parliament that was held on the 30 April 2015 in the Legislature Chamber ,and Arts and Culture Sectoral Parliament that was held on the 30 September 2015 in Borelelo community hall.

Some of the issues raised by participants during the Tourism Sectoral Parliament include lack of recognition by the Department of Tourism on product owners who have been on the market for more than ten (10) years; Capital City Development programme (Mahikeng) should be used as a mechanism to enhance tourism development; department should offer travel and tourism learners in ABET centers opportunities to enhance themselves and should conduct profiling for product owners so that they can be marketable in the tourism industry.

Amongst some of the issues raised during the Arts and Culture Sectoral Parliament was the limited role of the Department of Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs in addressing skills development in the sector; limited access to Arts and Culture programmes; lack of importance and awareness of artists as a pillar in the province and also to discuss the 2015/16 Budget adjustment process used to address financial issues raised in the 2014 Arts and Culture Sectoral Parliament.

Different stakeholders from tourism attractions in the province, North West Parks and Tourism Board, Department of Tourism, Women’s Tourism establishments in municipalities, accommodation and transport industries have been invited to attend the event. Arts and Culture stakeholders including members of the North West Federation of Community Arts Centres and senior officials from the Department of Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs will also attend the event.
