North West Legislature meets Provincial Education Department, 3 Feb

North West Legislature Education Committee to meet Department of Education over challenges found during school visits  

On Wednesday, 3 February 2016, the North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Education, Sports, Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs will hold a meeting with the Department of Education and Sports Development for the department to account on the challenges found during the Committee school visits across the province including challenges of overcrowding, shortage of furniture for learners, dysfunctional toilets at Mphe-Bana Secondary School at Temani Building (District building of Department of Education and Sports Development) in Potchefstroom at 18h00.

Some of the challenges the Committee found in the schools include overcrowding, shortage of furniture for learners and teachers; shortage of Mathematics and Physical Science teachers in Grade 10-12, where in some instances are foreign teachers whose contracts with the department has expired and are awaiting contract renewals; burglaries and vandalism in schools due to lack of security; Schools’ Post Provisioning Model not allowing more teachers in certain schools and non-functionality of school governing body’s sub-committees.
