North West Education on graduation of homework assistants

Matlosana celebrates homework assistants’ graduation

The North West Department of Education and Sport Development in collaboration with ETDP-SETA hosted a graduation ceremony of homework assistants who served in schools in the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda district. The graduations were held at Rio Hotel on Thursday, 3 December 2015.

A total of 48 unemployed matriculants in the Dr. K.K district were trained and placed at 19 selected schools as homework assistants through NQF Level 5 Development Practice learnership programme for a 12 months period to curb poor performance in learner educational outcomes.

Homework assistants in the North West province were piloted in January 2014 in the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district and in January 2015 Dr. Kenneth Kaunda district to supervise Grade 4 to 7 learners when doing homework and to assist learners who experience difficulties in doing their homework and have proven to be a success.

Through this programme, graduates can continue servicing their communities or further study towards obtaining Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree to qualify as teachers. This will help ease teacher shortage in the country. MEC Matsemela congratulates the graduates for the milestone taken in heeding the call to making education a societal issue.

“Graduation is a time of celebration and triumph and marks the end of one phase and beginning of the next phase. We wish that this experience with learners have inspired our homework assistant graduates and given you a wider spectacle on how much we as the country are in need of dedicated teachers to uplift the standard of education. It requires a lot of emotional adjustment for one to take upon a demanding career in education and I hope that you are inspired to take it further”, says MEC Matsemela.
