The World Special Olympic Games are held annually to celebrate the talent of people with disabilities. The North West Province sent 6 athletes, 2 coaches and 1 official to the games held in Los Angeles, USA.
The team departed on Monday 20 July 2015 and returned on 5 August 2015. The South African team consisted of 84 athletes and competed in 9 different codes, namely; track and field, basketball, golf, female football, table tennis, tenpin bowling, horse riding, swimming and bocce.
The North West delegation achieved as follows at the World Special Olympics:
- Oratile Makgwane obtained Gold in the 25 metre run and Bronze in the standing long jump.
- Pelonomi Moalutsi obtained Gold in the women table tennis single’s and Bronze in the women’s doubles.
- Tshepang Tsitsi obtained Gold in the 1500 metres and Bronze in the 800 metres.
- Bonang Modise obtained Silver medal in the 400 metres and 4th position in the 800 metres
- Dineo Monchonyane obtained Silver in the 3 000 metres and Bronze in the 1 500 metres.
- Sally Meiring obtained Silver in the team play, 4th position in the mixed doubles and 5th position in the ladies double.
The Greater Taung Municipality will celebrate their two champions, Pelonomi Molautsi and Dineo Monchonyane at a breakfast function as follows:
