Nkadimeng Dam Safety Rehabilitation Project
The Department of Water and Sanitation is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that all its dams are clean, safe and have no potential to cause harm to the members of the public.
Nkadimeng Dam is no exception as it is going through a process of being rehabilitated as part of the Department’s Dam Safety Rehabilitation Programme (DSRP) to ensure that dams comply with Dam Safety Regulations.
On Wednesday, 5 October 2016, the department convened a community meeting with the residents of Manganeng in Sekhukhune to update them on the progress of the project and source their inputs on how they want the project to go about.
The Nkadimeng Dam is located near Pshirwari River, which is 15 KM North West of Jane Furse in the Sekhukhune District of the Limpopo Province. The dam is an earth embankment with a maximum height of 21.1m above the riverbed and a crest length of 670 m, and it has an estimated storage capacity of 2.8 million cubic meters.
The dam supplies water for domestic use by local communities. The project will create employment opportunity for the community of Manganeng as the locals will be given preference when the project gets underway.
Based on the recommendations of previous dam safety evaluation reports and preliminary investigations carried out in 2012, a list of problems has been identified, which was then compiled into a scope of works for rehabilitation of the dam. The scope will include the following:
- Trimming the slope to a constant gradient
- Placing blanket and an inclined chimney drain
- Installation of toe drain with manholes
- Raising of outlet works retaining wall by 300 mm
- Replacing old vegetation slope protection by gravel material
- Increasing the spillway capacity.
The project is expected to commence in January 2017 and to be finished by the end of the same year.
