New York Academies of Science hosted by DSD
The Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) today welcomed a visiting delegation from the New York Academies of Science (NYAS).
A breakfast was held to discuss an ongoing partnership with the Rutgers University (USA), and the Community Chest. Dr. Meghan Groome, the Senior Vice-President of the NYAS, gave a presentation of their flagship programme, the “1000 Girls 1000 Futures: global STEM alliance”.
The programme falls in line with our efforts as the Western Cape Government to not only improve learner take up of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects, but also encourage youth to choose careers in this sector.
Addresses were also delivered by Social Development Minister, Adv. Albert Fritz, and Education Minister, Debbie Schafer.
Minister Schafer spoke of the importance of supporting and encouraging the take up of STEM subjects. The Education Department continues to roll-out key infrastructure to all schools, such as broadband internet and science labs, in order to improve opportunities for learners.
Minister Fritz spoke of the importance of linking youth to further opportunities, especially those not in employment, education or training (neets). The department’s five Youth Cafes are playing a key role in bridging the gap between youth and various industries. “Youth Cafes have a particular focus on creating ‘Digital Entrepreneurs’, able to enter various STEM job sectors or start their own businesses”, said Minister Fritz.
DSD will continue the work of building partnerships with stakeholders across South African society and internationally. We can create more opportunities for learners and youth if we continue to work, ‘Better Together’.
