The Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa), Mr Themba Godi, is disturbed by the misleading headline in the front page story of today’s The New Age newspaper entitled “Moyane deal probed”.
Scopa did not have a meeting with the Commissioner of the South African Revenue of Services (SARS), Mr Tom Moyane, and there was no tender involving Mr Moyane that was discussed in yesterday’s meeting. Instead Scopa had called the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Mr Michael Masutha, to brief the Committee on infrastructure, human resources, the use of consultants and contractors, and the information and communication technology plan of the Department of Correctional Services.
The tender on the Integrated Inmate Management System has been approved by the Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, Mr Zacharia Modise. At no point was Mr Moyane discussed at yesterday’s meeting.
We therefore find it disturbing and unacceptable that The New Age would run with a misleading headline. Scopa would not want to be drawn into contestations that have nothing to do with its mandate.
